The Empire Market - Historical animation Waterloo

The Empire Market

During the Heritage Days on 11 and 12 September, a large Empire Market will be set up in the gardens at the foot of the Lion Mound. Welcome to the Empire Market, welcome to 1815!

The aim of this grand weekend of celebrations is to recreate the atmosphere of a bustling market street in the Napoleonic era. As soon as you arrive you will be greeted by staff dressed in period costume and the garden at the foot of the Mound will be transformed into a village street containing stalls, a tavern and a bivouac of soldiers in uniform.

In the Napoleonic era, these craft markets were often set up spontaneously by members of the civilian population. In a festive atmosphere, craftsmen and other sellers would display their creations and wares in the hope of attracting the attention of the soldiers, officers and canteen keepers. They might also stop at the improvised inns along the way to enjoy a cool drink or a glass of wine.
You too can experience one of these typical markets. Climb aboard our time machine and enjoy a moment of relaxation by visiting our craft market. You can meet the craftsmen, admire the work of the different guilds, be tempted by the beauty of the stalls and relax in the soldiers’ tavern and enjoy some of the specialities of the time.

This event is being coordinated by Alain Habils of the 7th line brigade and organised by the 7th Dutch-Belgian regiment. The ASBL 7th Belgian line brigade is a historical association dedicated to Napoleonic re-enactments. Its members are passionate about the history of the First Empire and enjoy reliving the exploits of the 7th battalion line infantry and the 5th regiment of light dragoons. Both of these companies of Belgian soldiers distinguished themselves at the battles of Quatre Bras and then at Waterloo. Having withstood the attacks of the Grand Battery, and then of the troops commanded by Drouet d’Erlon, the soldiers of the 7th of the line resisted and participated in the victory of the Duke of Wellington’s Allies.
